Dr. Howard with Dusty, Scamp & Ace

Stan Howard
MA, DVM

Dr. Howard is the founder and owner of Animal Hospital at Grayhawk. He likes to say he's the boss too, but Hawkeye and Morty, the clinic kitties, tend to argue with him on that. And they usually win.

Born in Florida, Dr. Howard grew up in Ohio. He came into veterinary medicine with a diverse educational background, earning a B.A. in Anthropology from Ohio State University and a Master of Arts in Primate Behavior from Arizona State University before graduating from Colorado State University's School of Veterinary Medicine in 1989.

Dr. Howard moved to Phoenix shortly thereafter and worked at several of the top animal hospitals in the Valley. During those early years, he also taught courses at Mesa Community College and cared for chimpanzees at the Arizona Primate Foundation. In 1993 he opened his first animal hospital in north Phoenix. When he outgrew that space, the next step was Animal Hospital at Grayhawk, which he opened in May, 2002.

Wanting to give back to the profession that has enriched his life, Dr. Howard has been very active in the veterinary community. As the 1998 President of the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association, he led the state's premier veterinary organization. He was presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the AzVMA in 2002. Professional interests include canine reproduction, PennHIP radiology, and avian and exotic medicine. His personal time is filled with family. He has two active children, a Golden Retriever Dusty, three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Ben, Scamp and Chip, and a very patient cat, Angel. Boating, fishing and cheering on the Phoenix Suns take up any leftover time!

Joanne with Disney and Brinkley

Joanne Prellberg
Practice Manager

Joanne has been working with Dr. Howard since 1994, which would explain all her gray hair. Originally from suburban Kansas City, Joanne attended Northern Arizona University before graduating from Boston University with a B.S. in public relations. She received a J.D. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law before settling down in the Valley. The law degree comes in handy for running the business side. Joanne was named the Veterinary Office Manager of the Year by the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association in 1999.

Joanne has been showing and breeding dogs for over 30 years; the past 16 years with Bernese Mountain Dogs. She currently has four Berners: Brinkley, Gatsby, Disney and Pete, which she shows in conformation and trains for obedience, carting and tracking. She is always available to provide guidance on selecting the right dog breed and finding a reputable breeder.

Heather is originally from Tucson and worked in a veterinary hospital there for five years before moving to Phoenix. She has worked with Dr. Howard for over five years, at both his previous hospital and at Grayhawk. Heather is the proud parent of son Larak, and they share their home with kitty Baby. She is a movie and music fanatic: ask her any trivia, she'll know it! Heather is a Certified Veterinary Assistant and her years of experience and love of animals make her an asset to the Grayhawk team.

Suzanne with Fairbanks and Sydney

Suzanne Herrick
Veterinary Assistant

Suzanne moved here from Minnesota in 2003. With a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and and M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas, she brings a diversified background to her job at Grayhawk. After a number of career moves, which included technical writing, business ownership and marketing, she decided to go into a more rewarding field: working with animals. Suzanne has five pets of her own: cats Boston and Fairbanks, ferret Cairo and Shetland Sheepdogs London and Sydney and as if tending for both Grayhawk's lodgers and her own pets wasn't enough, she also does pet-sitting for clients whose pets prefer the sanctuary of their own home. In what little free time she has, Suzanne enjoys training and competing with her dogs in agility trials, fitness activities, reading, and watching home decorating shows.

Liz Gutweniger
Boarding Assistant

With a B.A. from the International School of Economics and Trade in Lucerne, Switzerland, Liz continues our tradition of hiring over-qualified individuals! Liz, who grew up in Lucerne, later attended New York University for Financial Accounting, Mergers & Acquisitions and was licensed to sell securities with the SEC and NASD. She and her husband Horst, who is retired from the automotive industry, moved to Scottsdale in 1998. Though a very active tennis player, Liz needed more to occupy her time, "After having worked in pretty large companies, Grayhawk has a real family-like atmosphere where everyone works together to assure a high quality of care" she says. We, along with your pets, are glad she left the world of finance and joined our team.

Alicia Vaughn
Groomer

Alicia was born and raised in Portland, Ore., then moved to Arizona. She was "born into the business", as both her mother and aunt are groomers. She started out as a bather in the family business, and so learned to groom at a very young age. Her days are filled with daughter and son and dogs Lexor (Great Dane/Lab mix), Rolex (Australian Cattle Dog mix), Puppy (Corgi mix) and Sugar the white kitty. She says that Grayhawk quickly became a second home for her, and we're thrilled she's a member of our family!
